We're Adopting!

I've been keeping this under wraps for a while, but I'm finally tired of keeping it to myself. We're adopting!

Will and I have been on the fence about children for many years, and due to some medical issues, I'm not comfortable with doing the whole pregnancy thing. Of course, to be honest, that was never really in our discussions about kids anyway. We've always talked about adoption—even when we were just dating—so in a way, this is a perfectly natural development. We feel it's what we're called to do after much talking, thinking, and praying. There are so many kids in the world who need homes, and we'd love to give one of them our home.

We're saving money now, and our plan is to start the process sometime this year or early next year. It's an expensive venture, so it's going to take us a little while to have enough cash to feel comfortable with filing the initial paperwork while we save the rest. We'll be adopting internationally from China, and since their program has slowed down considerably over the last few years, we'll be going the special needs route. But what China considers a special needs child isn't necessarily what we consider a special needs child. For instance, it could be a congenital heart defect, a club foot, a birthmark, or a cleft palate. All of these things are fairly manageable, and as first-time parents, that's as much as we feel able to take on.

Occasionally, I'll update you here on the process, but as you know by now, this is mostly a writing blog. We're excited, and I wanted to share our news.

Very cool to hear this and congrats on the decision! China is near to my heart as my wife runs a missions org that focuses on needs in rural southern China (www.projectpartner.org).

Thanks for sharing publicly and best of luck with the process. Will follow your updates.

Thank you, Josh! Southern China is probably where our child will come from.

Good luck. If you need any advice, Donna and Alex Carrick have already adopted from China. I am sure they would be happy to share their experiences.
